We have had this museum on our list of things to do for a while, and we recently visited, and it did not disappoint!
Our dads were both huge John Wayne fans. Brent and I grew up with his western movies always playing in the background of our childhood.
We were interested in learning more about The Duke because we really didn’t know much about him at all.

Even if you’re only casually familiar with John Wayne movies (like us), there is enough storytelling and history to keep you engaged.
One thing we appreciated was how well the exhibits were laid out. The museum flows naturally from one room to the next, making it easy to explore at your own pace. It caught and held our attention throughout the entire museum.

One of the biggest highlights for us was seeing the authentic costumes, movie props, awards, scripts, and personal belongings from John Wayne’s career.

Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, especially since the stockyards have cobblestone streets.
Parking at the John Wayne Museum
Since the museum is in the Fort Worth Stockyards, there are several paid parking lots nearby.
We parked in one of the Stockyards lots, and it was about a five-minute walk to the museum entrance. The lot we chose charged $25 for all-day parking, which felt a bit expensive to us.
It’s something to factor into your budget if you’re planning a visit.
We wish they offered more options so you could choose how long you plan to stay, rather than automatically being charged for a full day of parking.
If you’re visiting on a weekend or during a special event, plan to arrive a little earlier since the Stockyards can get busy.
Our recommendation is that since you are paying for a full day of parking, you might as well spend the day out in the Stockyards.
Highlights of Our Visit
There were so many interesting exhibits throughout the museum, but a few really stood out to us.
One of our favorite things was the collection of authentic costumes worn by John Wayne in some of his films. Seeing them up close gave us a new appreciation for the craftsmanship that went into the movies. If you’re a fan of his Westerns, you’ll probably recognize a few of them right away.
We enjoyed reading the personal letters on display. This added a personal touch, making the museum feel more intimate than a typical collection of items. It also gave us a brief glimpse into what personal relationships were like behind the scenes.
Another one of our favorite items in the museum was John Wayne’s personal car. He had it specially customized to better accommodate his tall frame.
He wasn’t concerned with luxury, even though he was famous and certainly had the money for a luxury car; he cared more about practicality.
It was interesting to see the thoughtful modifications that allowed him to drive comfortably, and it gave us another look into his everyday life outside of the spotlight.
One part of the museum we found especially unique was the bags of fan letters that John Wayne received over the years, but he couldn’t open, especially during the time that he got sick.
Instead of displaying the same letters all the time, the museum regularly rotates them by pulling different unopened letters from the collection and placing them on display open.
It’s a fun idea because every visit could offer something new to read, and it really shows just how many people admired him throughout his career.
While we expected to see movie memorabilia and props, we left with a much better understanding of John Wayne as a person, not just a Hollywood icon.
