We’ve hiked, hunted fossils, eaten tacos, grabbed burgers, and wandered through museums here. And every time we leave, thinking, ‘Why don’t more people talk about this place?

Where is Mineral Wells?
Mineral Wells is about 1 hour west of Fort Worth, making it an easy and low-effort getaway when you need a change of scenery but don’t want to pack a suitcase.

Hike at Lake Mineral Wells State Park

Lake Mineral Wells State Park offers scenic, easy-to-moderate hiking trails, rock-climbing areas, lake views, and plenty of wide-open Texas sky.
Entry Fee: $7 per day for adults (13+), children 12 and under are free. (unless you have a Texas State Park Pass like we do)
We love that it feels like you’ve gone much farther than an hour outside the metroplex.
Hunt for Fossils at Mineral Wells Fossil Park
Address: 2375 Indian Creek Rd, Mineral Wells, TX 76067
This one surprised us the most.
You can literally dig around and find real fossils for free.
It’s such a unique stop, and you don’t see it in most Texas towns. Bring a small shovel or garden tool, wear clothes you don’t mind getting dusty, and give yourself time to explore.

Visit Crazy Water

This town is known for its mineral water, and Crazy Water is where that legacy lives on.
You can sample different mineral water blends, browse their shop, and learn about the town’s history as a health resort destination by taking a tour.

It’s quirky, it’s very “only in Mineral Wells.” And we always stop in.
Grab a Drink at Crazy Water Coffee and Water Bar

If you need a little caffeine boost during your day trip, this is a great place to slow down for a bit.
They serve coffee, espresso drinks, teas, and, of course, drinks made with their famous mineral waters. It’s a cozy little spot to relax, cool off in the summer, or warm up in the winter.
Even if you’re not a coffee drinker, it’s worth stopping in for the atmosphere and the chance to try something unique to Mineral Wells.
Relax at Crazy Water Bath House & Spa

If you’re turning your day trip into a weekend getaway, consider booking a treatment here.
This beautifully restored historic bathhouse lets visitors experience the mineral water the way people did decades ago through mineral baths, spa treatments, and wellness services.
It’s a relaxing way to slow down and soak in a little piece of Mineral Wells history.
Explore the National Vietnam War Museum
Address: 12685 Mineral Wells Hwy, Weatherford, TX 76088
This museum was much larger than we’d expected and well done.
We enjoyed reading the letters from soldiers that they had displayed, which gave us more insight into what they experienced in war.
It’s detailed, educational, and thoughtfully curated. Plan to spend at least an hour here if you go. It adds a meaningful layer to your day trip beyond just outdoor exploring.
See the Iconic Baker Hotel
Address: 201 E Hubbard St, Mineral Wells, TX 76067
The Baker Hotel is a huge part of Mineral Wells’ identity and ongoing revitalization story. Seeing it in person gives you a glimpse into what this town once was and what it’s becoming again.
Even though it’s still under construction, it’s worth driving by this historic hotel.

Stop by the Mineral Wells Visitor Center

Don’t skip this.
The staff is genuinely kind and helpful, and the gift shop is surprisingly great. It’s one of our favs, and we enjoy stopping in every time we visit Mineral Wells.
It’s also a good first stop to grab some brochures (I love a good travel brochure LOL), ask questions, and get oriented before exploring town.
Bonus: The iconic Crazy Water Sign is right by the visitor center, which is worth a visit.
Where to Eat in Mineral Wells
After a long hike, we enjoy stopping at a local restaurant to refuel.

Taqueria La Estrella

If you’re craving tacos, this is your spot. It’s casual and perfect for refueling after hiking. They also have great cocktails if you are in the mood for one.
Dairy Mart
Address: 700 SE 1st St, Mineral Wells, TX 76067
Think burgers, fries, shakes, and nostalgia. They use Blue Bell ice cream in their shakes, which is a win for us.
What Surprised Us Most
Driving through town, it doesn’t look like there’s much to do.
But once we started exploring, we realized it was rich with history, unexpected experiences, and authentic local spots.
We were also surprised to find rock climbing here.
We visit here often when we want a quick day getaway, and that doesn’t take much effort.
