Meet the icon of Palo Duro Canyon – the renowned Lighthouse Trail! This 5.7-mile moderate round-trip trail adventure might sound challenging, but it’s a unique experience you shouldn’t miss. The Texas heat may test your endurance, but every drop of sweat is a testament to the breathtaking views awaiting you at the top!
- Start early – Before sunrise is best! Staying inside the canyon is the best option, as it allows you to start on this trail before the park gates open. There are several options for staying in the canyon, including RV sites, tent camping sites, and a few cabin rentals. We went in September, which was still quite hot, and we were glad to have started early and finished this trail by noon.
- Allow yourself approximately 3.5-4 hours (those Instagram-worthy photo stops can add up!).
- Pack more water than you think you need—the canyon floor is sneaky hot (about 10 degrees hotter than the rim!)
- Hiking poles make the final climb easier—trust me, that last bit up to the Lighthouse formation is a beast!
We tackled this beauty in September, and it was still a bit toasty! But you know what? That view at the top? Absolutely worth it. There are plenty of other great trails in the canyon, but this one? It’s an absolute must!

- Kiowa Trail – A relaxing and easy trail that brings you up close and personal with Palo Duro’s stunning red rock walls and desert landscape. A creek runs alongside it, adding to the peaceful vibe.
- Paseo Del Rio Trail – This easygoing trail features an old cowboy dugout that you can actually step inside and explore—perfect for a little Texas history along your hike!

The TEXAS Outdoor Musical is an unforgettable experience that you won’t want to miss! This show is a summer tradition in Palo Duro Canyon, performed right in the heart of the canyon, with its towering walls as the backdrop. It’s an incredible mix of history, music, and pure Texas pride.
Start your evening with a chuck wagon dinner that’ll make your taste buds do a little dance. We’re talking authentic Texas BBQ with all the fixings, served under a covered patio.
Now, let me tell you about the show – when that lone horseman appears on top of that 600-foot cliff with the Texas flag to start the show off?
Y’all, I’m not crying, you’re crying! It gets me every time! Even our teenage son was utterly blown away, which is saying something!
The show is funny, emotional, and full of action—definitely something I’d recommend to any visitor. Just a heads up: one small part of the show features fireworks, which can be very loud, especially since it’s in the canyon.
I remember attending this show as a child, and it was even more enjoyable to experience it as an adult with my family.
The Texas Outdoor Musical runs only from June to August, so if you’re visiting during the summer, be sure to catch this incredible performance under the stars!

After a long morning of hiking, sometimes you need a good coffee, a yummy breakfast, and a place to chill. Enter Sad Monkey Mercantile, conveniently located just outside the canyon, and our favorite hangout spot.
We loved this place so much that we visited multiple times!
- Delicious coffee & pastries to kickstart your morning.
- A fantastic breakfast menu (the food was always on point!).
- A cute gift shop stocked with souvenirs and even some camping essentials (because let’s be honest, we all forget something)
- Snacks & drinks to-go, perfect for loading up before heading back into the canyon.
- Live music on various nights—though we missed a show, it just gives us another excuse to come back!
- Board games to play while hanging out with your favorite beverage (which we absolutely did!).
And if that’s not enough Texas charm for you? Just look outside! There’s a pasture next to Sad Monkey Mercantile where you might spot some longhorns doing their thing. Talk about the perfect photo op!
Pro tip: Take the street right next to Sad Monkey Mercantile, Sunday Canyon Road. Here, you will find a pasture with more longhorns and donkeys.
The atmosphere here is so laid-back and welcoming, and the staff are some of the friendliest people you’ll meet. If you’re visiting Palo Duro Canyon, do yourself a favor and stop by—trust me, it’s worth it!

When is the best time to go?
Spring and Fall are the best times to visit. The crowds are fewer and the weather is cooler. It is not recommended to visit during the summer months due to the extreme heat, especially when hiking.
If you decide to hike in the summer months, start early and bring more water than you think you will need. Please make sure you take the heat seriously. It can get up to 10 degrees hotter on the canyon floor than the canyon rim.
We do not recommend visiting in the winter, as this area is very cold and prone to occasional snow or ice storms.
The one pro of visiting in summer is watching the Texas Outdoor Musical, which, of course, we highly recommend.
What are the park entrance fees and hours of operation?
The park entrance fee is $8 per person per day, and children 12 and under are admitted free of charge. We highly recommend reserving your daily pass online here as the park often reaches capacity, especially during busy seasons.
We recommend purchasing a Texas state park pass for $70, which grants you and anyone in your vehicle free entry into any of the Texas state parks for one year. This cost makes sense if you are planning on visiting other Texas state parks as well. Purchase yours here.
